Dark Horizons? New Directions in European History

Australasian Association for European History (AAEH)

29th Biennial Conference
8-10 July 2025

Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland

The 29th biennial conference of the Australasian Association for European History  (AAEH) will be hosted by the University of Auckland from 8-10 July 2025, with co-sponsorship from the University of Canterbury, the University of Otago, and Victoria University of Wellington.

The organisers welcome paper proposals from academics and post-graduate students (Masters and PhD-level) whose work reflects on European history, whether from local, global, (trans)national, imperial, post-colonial or indigenous perspectives.

We are particularly keen to receive proposals that look to reinterpret the European past, building on a long tradition in the AAEH of researching Europe ‘from afar’. While distance can be tyrannical, particularly when it comes to carrying out archival work, it also provides alternative perspectives. The 2025 conference offers an opportunity to foreground these perspectives. In recognition that our own world seems poised on a precipice, with two intensely ‘historical’ wars being fought on Europe’s edges, a climate crisis, and bitter ‘culture wars’ contesting questions of identity, we also ask: how do these dark horizons affect how we conceptualise Europe’s past?

Confirmed keynotes for the conference are:

  • Professor Annette Becker (Emerita, Paris Ouest Nanterre)
  • Assoc. Professor Scott Manning Stevens (Akwesasne Mohawk, Syracuse)

Confirmed plenary: ‘Indigenous approaches to European history’ with speakers Assoc. Prof. Scott Manning Stevens (Akwesasne Mohawk, Syracuse) and Prof. Angela Wanhalla (Kāi Tahu, Otago).
